Areas of slag with little humus (decomposing plant material or topsoil) and
only scattered grasses and pioneer species.
Areas of slag and soil debris with varying slopes and attendant development
of short woody plants (succession species).
There are many bare slag slopes at Nine Mile Run. Slag soil remediation and
regeneration is a challenging but not impossible endeavor.
Areas of herbs and grasses without significant woody vegetation.
Areas covered by trees with a distinctive understory and forest floor component,
including both disturbed and relatively undisturbed forests.
