Forest

Areas covered by trees with a distinctive understory and forest floor component, including both disturbed and relatively undisturbed forests. Many species of native plants typically found in mature forests occur at Nine Mile Run.

Tulip Tree (Liriodendron tulipifera)

Maple trees and leaves.

 
Dutchman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria)

 
May-apples (Podophyllum peltatum) often form large stands in the forests.
 
Dwarf larkspur (Delphinium tricorne) grows in rich moist woods.

Passion-flower (Passiflora lutea), which is listed as "endangered" in Pennsylvania, grew in the Nine Mile Run area in 1909, prior to slag dumping in the valley. Recent searches in the area for this species have been unsuccessful.
