Plateaus
Areas of slag with little humus (decomposing plant material or topsoil) and
only scattered grasses and pioneer species.
- Vegetated
Slag Slopes
Areas of slag and soil debris with varying slopes and attendant development
of short woody plants (succession species).
- Bare
Slag Slopes
There are many bare slag slopes at Nine Mile Run. Slag soil remediation and
regeneration is a challenging but not impossible endeavor.
- Grassland
Areas of herbs and grasses without significant woody vegetation.
- Forest
Areas covered by trees with a distinctive understory and forest floor component,
including both disturbed and relatively undisturbed forests.
