1. What is (was) the steel industry in Pittsburgh?

  • The steel industry was where they make steel and other equipment.
  • The steel industry was a long line of steel plants. It was polluted, and dangerous jobs. Actually it was so polluted, polluted the air and the ground. It also took lives because of hazard jobs.
  • Pittsburgh used to be a major town for making steel. Steel industry is a bunch of steel mills along the rivers where steel was made for construction equipment, exterior...
  • It created jobs and the people who got a job had a pay check and bought things so other companys got money.
  • The steel industry made steel for many things we use today like buildings. They caused a lot of pollution.
  • The steel mills where people made steel in Pittsburgh.
  • It was the steel capital of the world.
  • They just closed the steel mill in Hazelwood. The steel mills were all along the river but most of them were closed because they bought steel from other countrys and sold it.
  • The name was U.S. steel. They used steel to build buildings, pipes, cars.
  • A booming industry that got shut down.
  • LTV Steel was where almost everybody worked and they were all along the river, and Pittsburgh used to be called the Smoky City because of that.
  • Pittsburgh was the leading steel producer. The steel industry was a mill that has all the materials needed to produce steel. Now, the steel industry is less than before because when the renaissance came along in 1945 they made less steel mills. Therefore Pittsburgh has less steel.
  • In 1981, there were 16 companies in the steel industry in Pittsburgh according to DirectoryIron and Steel Plants 1981. Six of the companies were integrated steel producers; 5 were specialty and 4 were nonferrous specialty producers.
  • Big factories that made steel.
  • The main industry in Pittsburgh.
  • The steel industry in Pittsburgh was the Andrew Carnegie Steel Company.
  • The steel industry was the basic industry in Pittsburgh. It provided good jobs for lots of people.

  • The steel industry in Pittsburgh is making steel to sell. Steel could make lots of things.
  • The steel industry was the heart of this community. It gave many people jobs. But it also caused lots of environmental problems. When the steel industry closed, it left many people jobless. They bearred the smoke stakes and now call the place brownfield.
  • The steel industry is where they made steel and other things that were hot and dangerous.
  • It was a line of steel mills along the Monongahela River.
  • The Pittsburgh steel industry was a steel mill going almost 1 mile besides Monongahela River.
  • The steel industry helped giving Pittsburgh its nickname. Many people worked there. They polluted the air. Then suddenly people stopped running the industry. Soon people buried the factories. The places where they buried are called "Brownfields".
  • It was a place in Pittsburgh. The place was rich in coke, and rivers were good for transportation, so they started making steel since that was a perfect area for making steel. Immigrants came here and worked in the steel mills and the steel industry became big.
2. What do you remember the most about the slide presentation? What would you like to learn more about?
